This calibrates material 50mm into the edge of the material giving a consistent thickness e.g. 28.5mm or desired thickness.
In turn this gives a very consistent arris size and helps joints match. In particular natural stones often have thickness variation of between 28mm- 33mm so will help considerably in this situation
